“No I can’t escape it, they just sit and watch in bliss” belts Josh Caister -lead singer and rhythm guitarist of The Circus Birds- in the striking chorus of “Watching”. The tender yet fierce lyrics of the track sung over a hypnotic chord progression gives the song a distinct character that is evocative of many great modern rock bands that have emerged from the UK in recent years. The rest of the band are not to be forgotten though, with hard-hitting riffs and solos from lead guitarist Joe Martin, complex drum work intensely carried out by Finn Roe, and faultless bass lines passionately performed by Fred Forman. “Watching” is a track that illustrates the individual skills of each member resulting in a grand, impactful sound that is oftentimes missing in the local music scene.
This is an ambitious first release; the band show that they are not afraid to stray from the conventional song structure of mainstream music and instead insist on taking the listener on a journey throughout the song, ending on an intense instrumental that takes place after a bass-heavy breakdown following the second chorus.
The Circus Birds have certainly proved their musicianship with this track, but it begs the question- what will they come out with next? I ,for one, am eager to find out.
